Healthy Snack Recipes for Kids: Chicken and Vegetable Dumpling (Gyoza)

Another problem when it comes to feeding your children with nutritious meals and snacks is the trouble of getting them to eat stuffs that they don’t like but necessary for their well being – like vegetables. I often heard of children not liking stuffs like carrots and broccoli or cabbage as such. I believe this recipe is to overcome that sort of problem. But of course, it’s different if when your child is allergic to the food. That’s another case.

Chicken and Vegetable Dumpling (Gyoza)

Chicken vegetable dumpling gyoza

People do not usually blend the ingredients in the typical recipe of gyoza but when if you’re preparing it for your children, this is probably a good choice so that they barely know that we’re putting in stuffs that they don’t like in the beginning. You can add in extra chicken if necessary to avoid the detection of ingredients :)

Dippings can be either light soy sauce or chilli/tomato sauce. It is best to follow what your kids like most. I had to make this using the typical yellowish dumpling skin (couldn’t find the white ones since I was in a hurry). If you can find the particular white gyoza skin, it’ll be nice too! This recipe could be up to 4 servings. Well then, good luck!

.

Ingredients:-

  • 1/4 cup chopped cabbage, blended and drained
  • 2 tbsps chopped green onion blended
  • 250 g ground chicken
  • 1/4 cup chopped carrot, blended and drained
  • 4 button mushroom, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 2 tsps soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 small garlic clove, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp grated fresh ginger
  • 20 small dumpling or gyoza wrappers
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • Some salt and pepper

.

How to make / prepare Chicken and Vegetable Dumpling (Gyoza)

  1. Mixed all the blended and drained ingredients – cabbage, green onion, carrot together in a cooking bowl by using your hand or a big spoon. (if you are using your hands, make sure you clean it first, okay ^_^)
  2. Now add in the finely chopped button mushroom, garlic and ground chicken. Mix very very well till it form some sort of paste like texture.
  3. Then, add in the sesame oil, soy sauce, sugar and fresh ginger, salt and pepper and mix it again until well blended. Leave it in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes to let the taste of all the ingredients sinked in together.
  4. After that, take it out from the fridge and let it be for a while. In the meantime, you can start preparing the dumpling or gyoza wrappers.
  5. Make sure your hand are wiped dry before placing the wrapper on your palm. Take a spoonful (use teaspoon) of the mixture and place it in the middle. Put some water along the edge of the wrapper by using your fingerfingers. Make a semicircle, gathering the front side of the wrapper and sealing the top.
  6. Heat the vegetable oil in the pan. Fry one side of the dumpling or gyoza with high heat until the bottom become brown.
  7. Now, turn down the heat a little and add some water, about ¼ cup into the pan. It’s time for steaming to cook the rest of the sides. Cover the pan and steam it low heat until the water is gone which takes about 7-10 minutes or so.
