Introduction of Vitamin B and its functions
There’s only two types of vitamin that are water soluble like what have been mentioned in the vitamin introduction post. One of it is Vitamin B. It is easy for our body to absorb vitamin B, just as easily as emitting it out of our system. Vitamin B can also be lost in the process of cooking and washing water making it a little hard to maintain. However, one good news about Vitamin B is that there is no proven research that stated it’s harmfulness due to overdosing. So, you can take Vitamin B supplement as you like (but in a modest amount) and never have to worry about toxin build up.
Vitamin B, unlike all other Vitamins can be divided into smaller idiosyncratic groups in the sense that each has different chemical build up and coexist in the same foods. The many types of vitamin B can be distinguish by the specific name or numbering code such as B1, B2, B3 et cetera. However, there is only eight Vitamin B groups which are important for our body and are generally known as Vitamin B Complex when combined.
They are Vitamin B1(thiamine), B2(riboflavin), B3(niacin), B5(pantothenic acid), B6(pyrodixine), B7(biotin), B9(folic acid), B12 (cobalamines). There are more categories under vitamin B and the numbering code is actually up to vitamin B22.
Vitamin B has a number of functions for the human body.
- Vitamin B helps in metabolizing carbohydrates, lipids, and amino acids in the body.
- The existence of vitamin B in the body helps in maintaining and utilizing energy efficiently so that we are able to perform our daily activities. That is why lacking in vitamin can leave a person feeling very week, severe exhaustion, nausea, decreasing immune response and many other problematic health conditions.
- It helps in maintaining healthy skin and muscle tone too.
- Helps in improving our body’s immune and nerve functions.
- One of the main function of vitamin is it’s ability to create new cells, thus, promoting cell growth and division.
- Helps in producing red blood cells
There are numerous health conditions and diseases one may catch due to lack of vitamin B. such as beriberi, ariboflavinosis, heart diseases, severe skin problems, pellagra, dermatitis, weakness, fatigue, anemia, depression and even gradual memory loss. It is best that you pay close attention to the essential vitamin B or vitamin B Complex since it’s easier than picking individual vitamins as your daily supplements, unless it is stated by your physician to get a regular intake of certain specific vitamin B type.
There are many sources of vitamin B intake, and since vitamin B can easily be dispensed from our system, there is no harm of taking extras. Natural sources of vitamin include potatoes, bananas, tempeh, soy, liver, tuna, lentils, turkey and various kinds of greens though it might incomplete source of vitamin B. As for vitamin B12, it is not available from plant products, so it might be a little difficult to obtain for vegetarians. One option is to get from pharmacies in the form of supplement tablets.
