Food Allergies Intolerance: The Necessity to Know and Its Prevention
You know there are so many benefits of eating nuts, or eating salmon (proven to be one of the healthiest fish since it’s mercury content is relatively low), or even by drinking milk, but there is no use when you’re getting rashes, swollen lips or joints just by eating them. Yup, you may find it a little difficult in deriving all the potential benefits of a certain foods when you are allergic to them, unfortunately.
Allergy can be defined as an immune reaction to a foreign substance, usually within food components which is also called as hypersensitivity by researchers. Many people, when mentioned of the term food allergies would probably think of children. It’s true, it affects children the most but far less in percentage than we thought it was. (less than 8% of children have food allergies). The prevalence of food allergies within grown up is much less common, which occur in about 2% of the population. It may be due to several reasons; however, some of the cases may be of no obvious reason at all.
About 5% of food allergies are immediately toxic and so can result to immediate reaction, and there are other conditions, though a bit rare that can even cause death. So, do take this matter seriously if you are among those with food allergies since it can be deadly.
How does allergy happen?
In simple terms, allergy happens when some of the whole food protein or other large molecules enter the body tissues. These molecules, however are not couldn’t be digested by the body (in the digestive tract) and flows right into the bloodstream. Once they are inside, the body’s immune system reacts negatively and releases antibodies, histamine (a substance that cause inflammation), or any other defensive agents.
Food allergies symptoms and preventive steps
Reactions may vary for each person who suffers from food allergies. Certain people may experience rashes while another individual may have to endure muscle soreness. Basically, food allergy is a condition that can produce many different symptoms mostly affecting the digestive tract, the skin or the lungs. The common food allergic reactions are like swollen body parts, fatigue right after meal, bloating, nausea, spastic colon, sleeping disorders, join pains, apparent mood swings, irritable bowel syndrome, asthmatic reactions and even depression. Sometimes, the reaction is even effected by external attributes such as stress and seasonal allergies.
Physicians are able to test whether you’re allergic to a certain food or not, however, it is best that you try to do a little observation on your own in the first place. Keep a record of what you eat and whether there are any unexplained symptoms that you are experiencing. When you’re visiting the physician, you can refer the record that you’ve made to him and have you tested out for which kind of food you are really allergic too. You still need a physician to rework your diet so that you’re still getting the proper nutrients that your body needs. Remember, it is important to learn about food allergies and sensitivities in order to prevent them and treat them in both yourself and your children.
